X-ray image:
Historical find

Information:
For archaeology, X-raying finds is an important part of restoration measures. Digital X-ray inspection allows archaeologists to identify various finds. Especially for heavily corroded or encrusted objects, it serves as a basis for decisions about further restoration measures. Decorations and manufacturing techniques can be very well identified, as seen in the X-ray image.

Inspection possibilities:
Identification / Material condition

Coral Section

X-ray image:
Section through a coral

Information:
Biologists can draw conclusions about climate development from the annual rings of trees. In the same way, marine researchers use the growth rings of corals to obtain information about temporal changes in environmental conditions. However, the growth rings are not readily visible. As an alternative to chemical methods, digital X-ray inspection offers possibilities for precise analysis of growth rings.

Inspection possibilities:
Structure / Growth rings / Damage

Painting

X-ray image:
Madonna with Child

Information:
Historical paintings were occasionally painted over by other artists in the past. The reasons for this varied: Some artists could not afford new canvases. Often, however, old paintings were painted over to create forgeries on historically authentic canvas. Due to the different compositions of old and new paints, X-ray technology can determine whether there is an older painting behind the visible one. Since paintings are generally much larger than X-ray films, conventional X-ray methods for paintings involve considerable effort. By using digital X-ray line cameras, the effort can be reduced to a minimum.

Inspection possibilities:
Authenticity check, Classification

Surprise Egg

X-ray image:
Surprise egg

Information:
This X-ray image shows a chocolate egg with a plastic toy inside. Upon closer inspection, you can see a large hippopotamus and a baby hippopotamus. This (rather impractical) example represents the diverse possibilities of digital X-ray technology.

We leave that to your imagination…
